The Centre for Children in Vulnerable Situations (CCVS)-Uganda invited its colleagues, partners, beneficiaries and people who wanted to know more about the Organization’s activities to partake in a dissemination webinar that took place on November 5, 2020 on Zoom. The webinar was attended by 43 participants.
The content of the webinar was in line with the previously planned dissemination workshops earlier this year (March/April 2020), which had to be demobilized because of the COVID-19 lockdown in Uganda.
This dissemination report provides an outlook of CCVS-Uganda’s key achievements, lessons learned and future project planning during its first year (i.e., April 2019 to April 2020) of implementing its psychological rehabilitation project funded by the Trust Fund for Victims and CCVS-International.

The main purpose of the assessment was to map out the current needs for mental health support and rehabilitation services within the districts of Kitgum and Pader, and was intended to achieve the following specific objectives; (1) assess the mental health needs of the population, get insights into attitudes and knowledge on mental health, for whom (target groups) and in what places (locations); (2) collect relevant data and information on the current mental health interventions and resources, and how they are responding to the needs of the population; and (3) develop specific and reasonable actionable recommendations for ways in which gaps and bottlenecks can be addressed regarding mental health support and rehabilitation.

In November 2017, CCVS-Uganda performed a survey serving a dual purpose: (1) to conduct an evaluation of the psychological rehabilitation services implemented by CCVS-Uganda in closed and ongoing project sites (i.e., Lira Municipality, Bar Sub-County, Aromo Sub-County, Agweng Sub-County and Ogur Sub-County in Lira District) and (2) to map out (remaining) needs for psychological rehabilitation services in ongoing (see supra) and possible new project sites (i.e., Ngai Sub-County and Abok Sub-County in Oyam District). In total, 155 respondents participated in the survey including former and potential beneficiaries, government and community leaders, and non-governmental organisations.

Following our Network Event in Lira on Friday, CCVS organized its Dissemination Workshop at the Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium in Kampala. Prof. dr. Ilse Derluyn opened the stage by giving a short introduction to CCVS-International followed by our teams of CCVS-Uganda and CCVS-DRC presenting the activities of our support centres. In a final part, Leen De Nutte, Julie Schiltz, James Okello and David Kalema presented their PhD studies which took or are taking place in Uganda. It proved to be an interesting and interactive day!

On the 20th of January 2017, about 30 non-governmental and community-based organizations working in Lira District gathered in Margarita Palace Hotel, Lira. The organizations attended the Network Event organized by Centre for Children in Vulnerable Situations in partnership with Lira District Local Government and Lira NGO Forum. The goal of this event, as explained by Francis Okello, Community Development Officer and the MC of the event, was to strengthen partnerships and referral networks between organizations.

[2017-01-12] Graphic novel on former child soldier's experiences starring CCVS-Uganda

Walking through the Uganda Museum, one of our colleagues noticed CCVS-Uganda's team member Jennifer Ateng starring in a graphic novel. The graphic novel, a project of photojournalist Marc Ellison and illustrator Christian Mafigiri, elaborates on the stories of four female former child soldiers both during and after their time with the Lord's Resistance Army. The team of CCVS-Uganda was able to support one of these ladies, Christine.

Last week, Ilse, Lieve and Kurt, members of the board, visited our practice centre in Lira, Uganda. On Wednesday, we started off with a training by Dr. Dorothy Kizza (Butabika National Mental Referral Hospital, PCAF) on supporting persons with addictions. On Thursday, a field visit was planned in which a community dialogue and a support group were organized. On Friday, team meetings took place to follow up on CCVS-Uganda's daily activities. It proved to be an interesting and intense week!

This Sunday, our CCVS practice centre in Lira got a visit from The Flying Doctors crew. This TV show follows three young doctors in their journey from Belgium to the Virunga Park in DRC, where they leave their plane to support the rangers of the park. In the meantime, they visit several development projects in Africa. Also our psychosocial centre in Lira was one of their destinations. Our team showed the crew a sneak peek into their daily activities.
